Bernama: After a two-year absence from the Super Series Finals, Datuk Lee Chong Wei is optimistic of gunning for his fifth title in Dubai.
Despite not having played in several Super Series lately, it is not likely to be a hindrance for Chong Wei to expand his collection. The championship will be held from Dec 14 to 18.
As the most experienced player among the finalists, Chong Wei said he would not take it easy against younger players like Jan Jorgensen and Viktor Axelsen of Denmark, Son Wan Ho (South Korea), Tian Houwei (China), Ng Ka Long (Hong Kong) and Marc Zwiebler (Germany) as well as wild card, Chen Long of China.
Chen Long was given a wild card to complete the quota of eight players based on his status as Rio Olympics gold medallist.
“All players listed for the finals are superb players and I cannot take it easy with anyone of them. I do not want to think who would be my opponent, but I would rather concentrate on my own preparations.
“There is only one week left before leaving for Dubai, my health is improving and I have recovered from my injury, my target there is to win it for the fifth time, and all other contenders would definitely want to win as well,” he told reporters after a training session at Juara Stadium, Bukit Kiara, here, today.
Chong Wei qualified for the Super Series Finals on merit after occupying the seventh rank in the latest Super Series list issued by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
He won three of the six Super Series championships this year, the Malaysia Open, Indonesia Open and Japan Open.
Chong Wei was champion of the Super Series Finals in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2013.
