Aparna Balan enters semis

JAMSHEDPUR, Dec 20: Aparna Balan of Kerala created a major upset by beating nine time national champion Aparna Popat to enter the women's semi-final of the 3rd J R D Tata All India senior prize money Badminton tournament.

Trupti Murgunde, B R Meenakshi and Sayali Gokhale also notched up wins to move into the last four.

Balan won the first game 21-6, but Popat bounced back by taking the second 21-7. But Balan won the decider 21-14 to clinch the 55-minute match.

Balan will face Aditi Mutatkar (Maharashtra), who defeated Sayali Gokhale (AI) in a straight games 21-16 21-18 in another quarter-final match.

Top seed Trupti Murgunde of Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) got the better of Dhania Nair (Rlys) 21-5, 21-5.

Meenakshi trounced Krishna Deka Raja (Asm) 21-16, 21-7 in another quarter-final match.

Murgunde will take on her PSPB team-mate B R Meenakshi in the other semi-final to be played tomorrow.

In the men's singles, 6th seed Utsav Mishra (AI) will take on Thomas Kurien (Kerala) and 3rd seed Rohan Castelino (KTK) will clash with Ravinder Singh (UP) in the semi-finals on Thursday.
