Beijing: Two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan concluded his last match of the 2016/2017 China Badminton Super League (CBSL) on Saturday, spearheading Guangzhou Heyuan team to overcome the Jiangsu team 5-0.
Since both Guangzhou and Jiangsu teams have been out of contention for the semi-finals, Jiangsu did not feature Wang Shixian in the tie.
In the opening match of the tie, the Korea/China pair of Shin Baek-Cheol/Zhong Qianxin needed only 28 minutes to pocket the first match 21-7, 21-15 by defeating Jiangsu’s Zhang Sijie/Dong Yirong to give Guangzhou a 1-0 lead.
Next up, all eyes were set on the marquee encounter between Lin Dan and Shi Yuqi. Although Lin Dan held a comfortable 15-9 lead in the first set, Shi Yuqi upped his tempo to eventually grab the first game 21-16.
Lin Dan and Shi Yuqi were neck and neck in the second set. Both players were tied at 15-15 before Lin Dan reeled off four consecutive points to take the second set 21-16.
In the decider, Lin Dan capped a remarkable comeback by fighting back from 11-17, 14-18 deficits to produce an outrageous comeback to beat Shi Yuqi 21-19.
Guangzhou then zoomed to a 5-0 victory after winning their men’s doubles, women’s singles, and women’s doubles matches respectively.
As the 2016/2017 CBSL season came to a close, Guangzhou finished the regular season with 3 wins 11 losses to rank No. 7 in the ranking table, while Jiangsu was ranked 6th with 4 wins and 10 losses.
Meanwhile, the Liaoning team which suffered 14 losses in 14 ties, became the lowest placed team in the league and has been relegated from the China Badminton Super League.
