Jakarta: Former World No. 1 men’s doubles shuttler Tan Boon Heong of Malaysia is ready to debut his new men’s doubles partnership with Indonesia’s legendary men’s doubles player Hendra Setiawan at the 2017 Syed Modi International Badminton Championships that will be held in Lucknow, India from Jan 24th to Jan 29th.
Tan arrived in Jakarta last week to train with Setiawan before departing for Lucknow. Tan was aiming for a good outings for him and Setiawan at the Syed Modi International.
“I am excited and look forward to a fruitful partnership with Setiawan,” said Tan.
“I also would like to thank Seri Mutiara Development Sdn Bhd to continue to sponsor us, that’s very helpful in reducing our financial burdens,” said Tan.
Despite badminton fans’ excessively high expectations of Tan/Setiawan, Tan remained cautiously optimistic about their tournament debut.
“We will play our best, and we’re going to focus on one game at a time,” added Tan.
Meanwhile, Hendra Setiawan was also studiously conservative in their partnership.
“Of course, we are hoping for the best possible outcome in India. However, we only been practicing together twice,” said Setiawan.
“So far, we are getting used to playing together, but we still need to work on our rotations,” added Setiawan.
The pair was seeded No. 5 in the tournament, and will be coached by Lee Wan Wah and Chew Choon Eng of Malaysia. The duo will start their opener against Munawar Mohammed/Vishnura Rajendran of India.
If seeding goes to plan, the Malaysian/Indonesian pair will likely to clash with No. 1 seeds Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen of Denmark in the last eight on Friday.
