SONY Dwi Kuncoro clinched his first title since the 2005 Asian Championships when he beat his more illustrious Indonesian compatriot Taufik Hidayat in the Taiwan Open yesterday. Sony, seeded fourth, won 18-21, 21-6, 21-13 in 62 minutes to hand the latter his second straight defeat in a final. Taufik also made it to the Japan Open final eight days ago but was beaten by Malaysian Lee Chong Wei.
Sony, who came back from a game down to deny Taufik, had shown a return to form by finishing runner-up to China's World No 1 Lin Dan in the World Championships in Kuala Lumpur last month.
Indonesia made it a double when world champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan grabbed the doubles crown beating Denmark's former world champions Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen 21-17, 21-12.
Taking full advantage of the absence of China's top players, Indonesia then secured a third title when their mixed doubles pair of Flandy Limpele-Vita Marissa beat Denmark's Thomas Laybourn-Kamilla Rytter Juhl 21-18, 25-23 in the final.
However, their their attempt for a fourth crown was thwarted by Taiwan's Chien Yu Chin-Cheng Wen Hsing in the women's doubles when they beat Vita and Lilyana Natsir 21-15, 17-21, 21-18.
It was Yu Chin-Wen Hsing's second title of the year after winning the Philippines Open two months ago.
Indonesia Open champion Wang Chen of Hong Kong clinched the women's singles beating Pi Hongyan of France 21-18, 14-21, 26-24.
