The Super Series Masters Finals 2008, with total prize money of US$500,000, will take place from Dec 18-21 in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, the Badminton World Federation has announced.

It follows successful negotiations, spearheaded by BWF President Dr Kang Young Joong and BWF Events Committee Chair with host nation Malaysia. Non-starter: Lin Dan is not expected to play in Malaysia

“This is an extremely good outcome for our top players and it will be a chance for us to showcase again the world’s top elite players at the end of this Olympic Year,” BWF President Dr Kang said.

The format of the competition remains unchanged with the top eight ranked players/pairs in the Super Series ranking qualifying for the Finals. However, it is limited to a maximum of two entries per event per member nation.

Dr Kang has made the Super Series his top priority as the sport aims to continue its success following the Beijing Olympics. With Yonex stepping in as sponsors, the BWF will be hoping to cement the Super Series as an annual fixture.

The BWF launched its Super Series in 2007 when the Malaysian Open marked the first event, although the Finals were cancelled through lack of sponsorship.

This year, China's Olympic champion Lin Dan will not take part in Malaysia after failing to accrue the eight tournaments needed to qualify.
