HYDERABAD: National champion Saina Nehawal shocked eighth-seeded Elizabeth Cann of England 21-13, 21-5 in the women’s singles first round of the Thailand Grand Prix Gold badminton championship on Wednesday, according to information received here. In men’s singles, Anup Sridhar defeated Juergen Koch of Austria 18-21, 21-8, 21-16 in the first round. The other Indians who won their men’s first round matches were P. Kashyap who defeated Allan Tai of Malaysia 21-13, 21-12 and Ajay Jayram who beat Vietnam’s Hoand Nam Nguye 21-10, 21-17. Other results featuring Indians: J.B.S. Vidyadhar lost to Hsuan Xi Hsuesh (Tpe) 15-21,17-21; Chetan Anand lost to Ng Wei (Hkg) 15-21,16-21; Arvind Bhatt lost to Kazuteru Kozai (Jpn) 14-21, 17-21; Anand Pawar lost to Wei Feng Chong (Mas) 20-21, 19-21; R. M. V. Gurusai Dutt lost to Alamsyah Yunus (Ina) 16-21, 13-21; Aditi Mutakar lost to Salakjit Ponsana (Tha) 17-21, 1-21.

Lin pushed by Thai qualifier Pakkawat TOR CHITTINAND China's world number one Lin Dan and local star Boonsak Ponsana got off to a winning start at the SCG World Grand Prix Thailand Open Badminton Championships at Nimibutr Gymnasium yesterday. But while the Thai secured a comfortable win, the Chinese struggled to reach the second round in the men's singles. Lin took the first game 21-11 against Thai qualifier Pakkawat Vilailak. But the little-known Thai fought back to stun the Chinese star 21-17 in the second game.

Boopathy ZAKRY Latif-Fairuzizuan Tazari can now stake claim to be one of the elite combinations in world men's doubles after securing their second straight Super Series title at the Indonesia Open in Jakarta yesterday. Zakry-Fairuz, the World No 13, came back from a game down to beat former Olympic champions Candra Wijaya of Indonesia and Tony Gunawan of the United States 19-21, 21-18, 21-14 in 53 minutes at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
