Indonesia holds high hopes that its two singles players, Taufik Hidayat in the men's and Adrianti Firdasari in the women's, will advance to the second round of the Yonex All England Open Super Series 2009.
During their first round matches at National Indoor Arena in Birmingham on Wednesday, former world top shuttler Taufik beat Hsieh Yu Hsin of Taipei with a top effort in the 21-19, 15-21, 21-14 rubber set.
In the second round on Thursday, world No. 7 Taufik will challenge either nonseeded Chetan Anand of India or Andrew Smith of Britain.
Firda meanwhile rounded up her match in 27 minutes, ousting Bulgarian Linda Zechiri 21-12, 21-15, and will now face world No. 5 Xie Xingfang of China in the second round.
Commenting on Taufik's performance, coach Mulyo Handoyo expressed satisfaction over his trainees achievement, despite the rubber set.
"He did quite well today *Wednesday*. At least he advances to second round," Mulyo said in a text message after the bout.
Former Indonesia's top shuttler in men's doubles Christian Hadinata said that Taufik has an equal chance to win over any of his opponents in the second round battle.
"The two players *Anand and Smith* are likely at the same level with Yu Hsin."
The 2009 All England is the first event for Taufik as a full professional player.
He is reportedly longing to snatch this year's title.
