China And Indonesia Into Thomas Cup Semis

KUALA LUMPUR, May 12  -- Defending champion China and second seeds Indonesia booked their semifinal tickets after beating their respective opponents in the quarter-finals of the Thomas Cup badminton tournament at the Putra Stadium here Wednesday.

China will face either host Malaysia or European darkhorse Denmark, while Indonesia will square off with the winner of the Germany-Japan quarterfinal.

The two remaining quarterfinals will be played this evening.

Hunting for their eighth Thomas Cup title, China whipped South Korea 3-0 after beating the Koreans 4-1 yesterday in their final group preliminary.

Beijing Olympics gold medallist Lin Dan opened accounts for China, beating Park Sung Hwan 21-16, 21-15 before doubles Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng widened the lead by defeating Jung Jae Sung and Shin Baek Choel 21-11, 21-16.

A WOUNDED Malaysia will be out to make amends when they take on third seeds Denmark in the quarter-finals tomorrow.

And if they win, they will have to face the hot favourites and defending champions China in the semi-finals.

Malaysia had to deal with a tough draw yesterday after the hosts went down to a 2-3 defeat to Japan in the final Group B tie.

The defeat saw Malaysia losing an opportunity to be one of the four seeded teams in the quarter-finals.

If they had won, they would have met the seeded teams only in the semi-finals.
