Kuala Lumpur: Concerns over Lee Zii Jia’s mental health surfaced this week after the Malaysian shuttler posted several cryptic black-and-white art illustrations on social media without captions. Some fans and media outlets speculated about his well-being.

In a touching show of solidarity, the global sports community rallied around Lee Zii Jia, leaving heartfelt messages on his Instagram post amid public concern about his emotional state.
Among the notable voices offering words of encouragement was former world junior champion Goh Jin Wei, who wrote, “⏳ will heal everything,” a quiet reminder that time heals all wounds.
Goh Soon Huat, Malaysia’s mixed’s doubles ace, dropped fire and flex emojis — “🔥💪” — symbolizing strength and resilience.
From across borders, Olympic diving gold medalist Quan Hongchan of China joined in, commenting in Mandarin, “继续战斗” (“Keep fighting”), a strong sign of encouragement that transcends sports and nationality.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s National Sports Council (MSN) quickly addressed the matter and confirmed that Lee Zii Jia is in good spirits and mentally stable.
“We’ve spoken with Zii Jia’s management team, and they’ve assured us that he is fine. The recent posts are likely just a form of artistic expression,” said Jefri Ngadirin, Director General of MSN.
🧠 No Alarming Signs, Just Artistic Expression
Lee Zii Jia, 27, recently returned from winning a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, and is considered Malaysia’s top hope for a podium finish at LA 2028. The athlete’s cryptic Instagram activity prompted many to speculate about his mental condition.
Still, Jefri clarified:
“He might just have an interest in visual art or symbolic storytelling. Regardless, MSN remains fully open to offering support if needed—through us or the National Sports Institute (ISN). He’s a national asset.”
🔜 Focus Now on the BWF World Championships
Lee Zii Jia is currently in training for the BWF World Championships, scheduled for August 2024. MSN emphasized that external speculation should not disrupt his preparations.
“He’s focused on the upcoming World Championships, and we don’t want distractions to derail his momentum. Let’s give him space to prepare,” Jefri told reporters.
🤝 Athletes’ Day Brings Sports Community Together
Jefri spoke during the inaugural Athletes’ Sports Day 2025, held at Bukit Jalil National Stadium. The event brought together over 350 athletes, including para-athletes, to foster camaraderie across different sports.
“This initiative came from the athletes themselves. They wanted a day to connect with peers from other disciplines. We’re considering making it an annual event,” Jefri added.
Lee Zii Jia’s recent social media activity may have sparked concern, but Malaysia’s sports authorities have confirmed he remains focused, stable, and fully committed to the road ahead. As one of the nation’s brightest badminton stars, all eyes will be on him as he prepares for the World Championships next month.
