SINGAPORE — Malaysia’s top men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik head into the 2026 Singapore Open determined to successfully defend the title they captured last season.

The world No. 2 duo arrive in Singapore eager to bounce back strongly after their disappointment at the Malaysia Masters 2026, where they were eliminated in the semi-finals.

With another major Super 750 tournament beginning this week, Aaron and Wooi Yik remain among Malaysia’s strongest hopes for a title run.

Aaron Chia Confident Ahead of Title Defense

Aaron said the pair have prepared carefully for the tournament and are approaching the competition with the right mindset.

“Of course we hope to defend the title we won last year and we came here with solid preparation,” said Aaron during a press conference in Singapore.

“At the same time, we do not want to place too much pressure on ourselves. We just want to focus on taking things match by match.”

The Malaysian pair will open their Singapore Open campaign against France’s Popov brothers, Christo Popov and Toma Junior Popov, in the opening round on Tuesday.

The French brothers are known for their aggressive attacking style and fast court coverage, making them dangerous opponents despite Aaron and Wooi Yik entering the match as favorites.

Possible Clash Against Korean World No. 1 Pair

One of the biggest storylines surrounding the tournament is the possibility of another high-profile showdown between Aaron-Wooi Yik and South Korea’s world No. 1 pair Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae.

The Malaysian duo have faced the Korean pair several times in recent months as the rivalry continues to grow into one of the most exciting battles in men’s doubles badminton.

Wooi Yik admitted both pairs already understand each other’s game very well.

“We’ve played against them many times already, so there are not many major differences anymore,” said Wooi Yik.

“There is one important aspect of our game that we still need to improve, and hopefully we can overcome them at the Singapore Open this year.”

The rivalry between Malaysia and South Korea in men’s doubles has intensified throughout the 2026 season, with several close matches played at major BWF World Tour events.

Malaysia’s Strong Lineup at Singapore Open 2026

Malaysia will once again send a strong contingent to the Singapore Open across multiple categories.

Aaron and Wooi Yik headline the Malaysian challenge as defending champions in men’s doubles, while professional pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani also enter the tournament as serious contenders after reaching the Malaysia Masters final.

In women’s doubles, world No. 2 pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah remain among the favorites to challenge for the title.

Meanwhile, mixed doubles hopes will largely rest on world No. 3 pair Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei, who continue to establish themselves among the elite pairs in international badminton.

Aaron-Wooi Yik Looking for Strong Response

Although the Malaysian pair have already enjoyed another consistent season on the BWF World Tour, the disappointment from the Malaysia Masters remains fresh.

The defeat in front of home fans has added extra motivation as they look to quickly regain momentum heading into another important stretch of the season.

With Olympic qualification points becoming increasingly important over the coming months, every deep tournament run could play a major role in shaping the world rankings.

For Aaron and Wooi Yik, defending the Singapore Open title would not only boost confidence but also reinforce their position among the world’s elite men’s doubles pairs.

Singapore Open Expected to Deliver World-Class Badminton

The 2026 Singapore Open is once again expected to feature many of the world’s biggest badminton stars across all five disciplines.

From fierce men’s doubles rivalries to elite singles showdowns, badminton fans can expect another week of high-level competition as the BWF World Tour continues its busy Asian swing.
