Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s Ng Tze Yong will officially leave the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) by mutual agreement, bringing an end to his long journey with the national badminton body.

BAM confirmed that the men’s singles player will depart effective June 30, following discussions between both sides. The decision was described as the best move for the 26-year-old as he prepares for the next phase of his professional career.

Ng, once ranked as high as world No. 14 in November 2023, had been regarded as one of Malaysia’s most promising men’s singles players. However, his progress was interrupted by a difficult run of injuries, including a back problem in 2024 and an anterior cruciate ligament injury in 2025 that required surgery and a lengthy recovery process.

BAM Thanks Ng Tze Yong for His Service

BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz paid tribute to Ng’s contribution to Malaysian badminton, noting that the player had represented the country with pride on the international stage.

“Tze Yong has been an important part of the national squad and has represented Malaysia with pride internationally. Although injuries affected his career journey, his resilience throughout the recovery process is deeply appreciated,” he said in a statement.

He added that both BAM and Ng had reached the decision after careful discussion.

“After in-depth discussions, both parties agreed that this is the best step at this stage. On behalf of BAM, we thank him for his contributions and wish him success in the future,” he said.

Ng Tze Yong Focused on Full Recovery

Ng also expressed his gratitude to BAM, the National Sports Institute, coaches, support staff, teammates, sponsors, and fans who had supported him throughout his national team career.

For now, his immediate priority is not competition, but recovery. Ng said he will take time away from tournaments to focus on returning to full fitness before planning his next move as an independent player.

“For now, my focus is to fully recover and return to fitness. I will take time away from competition to continue my rehabilitation before returning to the court,” he said.

Thirteen Years With BAM

In a message posted on Instagram, Ng reflected on his 13 years with BAM and the National Sports Institute, describing the journey as unforgettable.

He thanked BAM for helping shape his career from a young player with a dream into the athlete and person he is today. He also expressed appreciation for the support he received during one of the most difficult periods of his career.

Ng said he will now continue his career as an independent player while remaining focused on his rehabilitation.

“As I begin a new chapter, I will continue my career as an independent player while focusing on my recovery. I am motivated, excited, and determined to come back stronger than ever,” he wrote.

He ended his message by saying that this is not the end, but the beginning of a new chapter.

A Career Interrupted by Injuries

Ng’s departure from BAM comes after several seasons that showed both his potential and his physical challenges.

Among his notable achievements were a men’s singles silver medal and mixed team gold at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. He was also part of Malaysia’s gold-winning squad at the 2022 Badminton Asia Team Championships and contributed to Malaysia’s bronze medal finishes at the Sudirman Cup in 2021 and 2023.

Those results made him one of the key names in Malaysia’s men’s singles setup, especially during a period when the country was looking to build more depth behind its senior players.

However, repeated injury setbacks limited his ability to build consistent momentum on the BWF World Tour. His back issue in 2024 and ACL injury in 2025 forced him into a long recovery phase and disrupted what had looked like a promising rise.

New Independent Chapter for Ng Tze Yong

Ng Tze Yong’s move away from BAM marks a significant badminton news development for Malaysia’s men’s singles scene.

While his immediate focus remains on rehabilitation, his decision to continue as an independent player means fans could still see him return to competition once he is fully ready.

For now, the priority is patience. If Ng can recover properly and rebuild his physical condition, his independent career may offer him a fresh start and a chance to rediscover the form that once took him into the world’s top 15.
