Kuala Lumpur: After Malaysia failed in its bid to defend their badminton men’s singles gold medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, a title it had held in 6 consecutive editions since 1990, world number one Lee Chong Wei reaffirmed his drive to put in a strong showing at the upcoming World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, from Aug 25 to Aug 31; and Asian Games in Incheon, Korea, from Sept 16 to Oct 6.
“It’s disappointed that we were not able to defend the men’s singles title at Glasgow. On the bright side, we exposed some of our younger players to a different level of competition, it’s good for their growth and development,” said Chong Wei.
Lee Chong Wei is the overwhelming favorite in the Copenhagen World Championships in the absence of Lin Dan. However, he only has two more weeks to prepare for the World Championships after recovering from his thigh injury.
“I started my training last week, I am not at my 100% yet, and I’ll have to be careful to avoid any injuries prior to the world meet,” added Chong Wei.
As for the Asian Games, Chong Wei is looking forward to settle his unfinished business with Lin Dan in Incheon after he lost to Lin in the final 13-21, 21-15, 10-21 at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games.
“Asian Games is just like Olympics, it only held every four years. I am going to enjoy and to play my best game, I’ll let the rest take care of itself,” said the determined Chong Wei.
