Kuala Lumpur: World No. 43 men’s singles player Goh Soon Huat has followed the footsteps of Tan Kian Meng to switch from men’s singles to mixed doubles.
Goh has not enjoyed any major breakthroughs after joining the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) as a men’s singles player in 2009. His best result was advancing to the final of 2013 Malaysian Open GP and the semi-final of 2015 Macau Open and Dutch Open.
After the switch, the 26-year-old Goh will partner with Shevon Lai Jemie after her regular mixed doubles partner Wong Fai Xin quit the Malaysian national team in July.
“Honestly, I have been training very hard, but it is too difficult to make a remarkable breakthroughs in the men’s singles category. I don’t see any future for myself in men’s singles,” said Goh.
“This is a very difficult decision, but I know I have to give up the men’s singles, and let’s see how things will work out in mixed doubles,” added Goh.
Goh has given himself two years to make his mark as a mixed doubles player. He and Lai will kick off their international debut at the 2016 Axiata Malaysia International Challenge 2016 in Sabah that will be held from November 8 to November 13.
