HYDERABAD: China coach Tang Hsienhu has attributed Lin Dan’s success in winning three consecutive world championship titles to his ability to keep his emotions in check.
Hsienhu, known as “The Thing” in his playing days for his power on court, said that Lin Dan was a rare gem of a player.
“He is a player with strong emotions and he knows how to handle them. He is strong-willed too and it is never easy to take a game off him,” said Hsienhu.
He made a comparison between Lin Dan and 2000 Sydney Olympics champion Olympic Ji Xinpeng.
“Xinpeng won the Olympic gold medal but that was the end of him.
“It is not easy to keep on winning and having that motivation to excel all the time. But Lin Dan can do this because he is strong in his heart.”
Hsienhu also saw the same determination in Indonesia’s Sony Dwi Kuncoro.
Sony kept his cool throughout his demolition of world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei in the quarter-finals and gave Lin Dan a run for his money before going down in the semi-finals.
“Sony has improved as a player. He looks fitter and there is more urgency in his game. If he keeps himself free from injuries, he will do well in his game,” said Hsienhu.
“Chong Wei has to be more steady, which he was not during the match against Sony. Maybe he was unable to cope with the high expectations on him.”
