KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1, Malaysian pair Chooi Kah Ming-Ow Yao Han created a history of their own by saving four match points in the deciding set to win the men’s doubles individual title in the World Junior Badminton championships at the Sultan Abdul Halim Indoor Stadium on Sunday night.
Kah Ming-Yao Han beat Muhammad Ullinuha-Berry Angriyawan of Indonesia 19-21, 21-12, 23-21 in a thrilling three-set final which could have gone either way as the Indonesian pair had four match points as the score stood at 20-16 in their favour.
But as the Indonesian pair squandered four match points, the Malaysian duo held their nerves to clinch the match on their second match-point attempt, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
The win by the duo was enough consolation for the home crowd who saw national junior number one Zainuddin Iskandar Zulkarnain losing 12-21, 17-21 to China’s Houwei Tian in straight sets.
Meanwhile, neighbours Thailand, better known for sepaktakraw and kick-boxing, sounded their arrival on the world badminton stage by clinching the women’s singles and mixed doubles titles.
Maneepong Jongjit-Rodjana Chuthabunditkul gave Thailand their first world title after beating Indonesian pair Angga Pratama-Destiara Haris Della 21-19, 14-21, 21-17 in three sets while Ratchanok Intanon took the women’s singles title by beating Porntip Buranaprasertsuk 21-15, 21-23, 21-10 in an all-Thailand final.
"We were trailing 16-20 in the final set but we kept our cool and remained focused. Victory was certainly sweet as this is my last junior world championship," said Kah Ming who will not be eligible for the junior category when the next championship comes around.
His partner Yao Han who was equally elated by the win was however sad that he would not be able to partner Kah Ming in the future.
