Tokyo: Japan’s World No. 9 women’s singles badminton star, Aya Ohori, also known as the “Ethereal Goddess,” shocked badminton fans on Friday by announcing her retirement at the end of the current season.
Ohori posted the heartfelt message on social media, stating: “I have an important announcement to make. I’ve decided to retire at the end of this year. My badminton journey hasn’t been smooth, but thanks to the support of many people around me, I’ve made it this far.”
She was thankful to the Nippon Badminton Association, her family, friends, and loyal fans. “Without your support, I wouldn’t have reached where I am today. Through badminton, I’ve learned so much and gained many incredible experiences.”
Ohori admitted that retiring from badminton is a very difficult decision for her. “Looking back on my 22-year career, filled with happiness thanks to everyone’s support, I feel truly blessed.”
She also revealed that next week’s Kumamoto Masters will be her final appearance on home soil as a player and encouraged fans to come and cheer her on.
The 28-year-old Ohori won a bronze medal at last year’s Hangzhou Asian Games. She clinched her first-ever Super Series title at the 2024 Thailand Masters (a Super 300 event) and went on to win the 2024 Australian Open (a Super 500 event) on June 16, 2024.
