Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysia Purple League saw an exciting fight on Wednesday, when the tie between the league’s No. 3 team Petaling Jaya BC and Puchong United BC brought a lot of energy to the court.
Puchong United started with a strong performance from its first men’s singles Soo Teck Zhi and defeated Muhammad Hafiz by taking a 5-11, 5-11, 11-10, 11-8, 11-10 victory over the 2003 All England Champion at Sentosa Sports Arena.
The so-called badminton angle of Japan and 19-year-old shuttler Aya Ohori showed her dominance on the court, overcame Yang Li Lian of Petaling Jaya 8-11, 11-7, 11-8, 8-11, 11-9 to give Puchong United a 6-4 lead.
Woon Khe Wei/Nipitphon Puangpuapech broke their teammates’ losing streak, scoring a much needed for Petaling Jaya with a 3-1 victory in mixed doubles over Yew Hong Kheng/Lai Pei Jing.
Or Chin Chung/Tan Chun Man then collected a 3-2 win against Ow Yao Han/Tan Wee Gieen to put Petaling Jaya at a slight 10-9 edge.
The crowd erupted into applause as Lee Chong Wei closed out the second men’s singles match against Indonesian Andre Kurniawan Tedjono with 11-4, 11-5, 11-5 as Petaling Jaya came from behind to clinch a narrow 13-9 victory.
The worst team in Purple League, finally got their first victory of the season as they defeated the No. 2 team Cheras BC 8-6 in somewhat unconvincing fashion, after the second men’s singles match between Nguyen Tien Minh of Kajang BC and Zulfadli Zulkifli of Cheras BC was cancelled.
