Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia has arrived in Sydney for the Australia Open, and his presence has quickly become one of the main talking points ahead of the Super 500 badminton tournament.

The tournament organizers welcomed Lee’s arrival through the official Australia Open Instagram page, describing the Malaysian professional men’s singles player as one of the key attractions of this year’s event.

Lee, now ranked world No. 64, returns to Sydney as the only former Australia Open champion competing in this edition. That alone has added extra attention to his campaign, especially as fans wait to see how far he can go after a period away from competition.

“He has arrived. Lee Zii Jia is in Sydney and has started training ahead of the 2026 Australia Open,” the organizers said.

“The former Australia Open champion is back, and all eyes will be on his campaign this week. Can he go deep again in Sydney?”

Lee Zii Jia Starts From Qualifying Round

Lee is expected to begin his Australia Open challenge in the qualifying round against Japan’s Shogo Ogawa. If he clears that opening hurdle, he could face another Japanese player, Riki Takei, for a place in the main draw.

Should Lee make it through qualifying, the 2024 Australia Open champion is projected to meet Taiwan’s Lee Chia Hao, currently ranked world No. 29, in the opening round of the main draw.

For Lee, the tournament will be an important test of both match sharpness and physical condition. The Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medalist did not compete at the Malaysia Masters, making the Australia Open a useful platform to assess where his game stands before the next stretch of the badminton season.

Although his ranking has dropped, Lee remains one of the most recognizable names in men’s singles badminton. His attacking style, previous success in Sydney, and comeback storyline make him one of the players to watch this week.

Justin Hoh Opens Against Kiran George

Malaysia will also be represented in men’s singles by Justin Hoh, who is currently ranked world No. 47.

Justin will begin his campaign against India’s Kiran George in the first round. The match gives him another opportunity to build momentum on the BWF World Tour and strengthen his position among Malaysia’s men’s singles players.

Malaysia also has two players in the men’s singles qualifying draw, with Eogene Ewe and Lim Ming Hong set to compete for places in the main draw.

Wong Ling Ching and Goh Jin Wei Carry Malaysia’s Women’s Singles Challenge

In women’s singles, Malaysia will have two representatives in the main draw.

Wong Ling Ching is scheduled to face India’s Aakarshi Kashyap, while professional player Goh Jin Wei will take on another Indian opponent, Malvika Bansod.

Both matches will be important tests for the Malaysian women’s singles camp, especially against Indian players who are capable of producing long rallies and physically demanding matches.

Malaysian Doubles Pairs Face Early Tests

In men’s doubles, professional pair Chia Wei Jie and Teo Ee Yi will open their Australia Open campaign against Indonesia’s Putra Erwiansyah and Bagas Maulana.

The match could be a difficult first-round assignment, with the Indonesian combination expected to bring speed and attacking pressure from the start.

Malaysia’s young women’s doubles pair Low Zi Yu and Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan also face a tough opening match. They have been drawn against Taiwan’s second seeds Hsieh Pei Shan and Hung En Tzu.

For Low and Noraqilah, the match will be a valuable opportunity to gain experience against a higher-ranked pair in a Super 500 event.

Australia Open Offers Important Stage for Malaysian Badminton

The Australia Open may not carry the same status as a Super 750 or Super 1000 tournament, but it remains an important stop on the badminton calendar, especially for players looking to rebuild form, collect ranking points, and gain confidence.

For Malaysian badminton fans, much of the early attention will be on Lee Zii Jia. His return to Sydney as a former champion gives the tournament an added storyline, while his performance will offer a clearer picture of his current level.

With Lee Zii Jia, Justin Hoh, Goh Jin Wei, Wong Ling Ching, and several doubles pairs in action, Malaysia will have plenty to follow as the Australia Open gets underway.
