Ho Chi Minh City: Six months after becoming Vietnam’s only shuttlers to qualify for the Rio Olympics, both the former World No. 5 men’s singles player Nguyen Tien Minh and longtime girlfriend plus teammate current World No. 37 women’s singles player Vu Thi Trang have reportedly tied the knot on Monday.
Nguyen and Trang have gone through many ups and downs in their badminton career, and have always provided invaluable support to each other, especially when they went to Rio without badminton coach accompanying them.
Despite playing in different badminton events, the two always had the chance to train and play together either in the national team or in international competitions.
Trang was a promising rising star in Vietnam who had won the bronze medal at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics at the age of 18, but later failed to thrive in her career. She relied on the support and encouragement from Nguyen to gradually resurrect her career of becoming Vietnam’s top women’s singles player.
Meanwhile, the 33-year-old Nguyen who currently serving as a player and a coach in the Ho Chi Minh City badminton team, said he will continue his professional career through 2017.
“Today Trang and I officially tie the knot after years of sweet memories of love and badminton,” said Nguyen at his wedding ceremony.
