Kuala Lumpur: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) received a tremendous boost when they extended their sponsorship with Celcom Axiata by additional 15 months in a new deal that worth RM10 million.
Celcom Axiata is a telecommunications provider in Malaysia. The company’s existing three-year sponsorship deal that worth Rm24 million will end on June 2019 while the extended deal will push the deadline to August of 2020.
According to Celcom chairman Tan Sri Jamaluddin Ibrahim, he said the extension was a good gesture from his company to provide support for the Malaysian badminton team to do well at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
“We are committed to develop and to nurture our young talents, therefore, it’s our pleasure to be the main sponsor for BAM,” said Ibrahim.
BAM president Datuk Seri Norza also showed his gratitude to Celcom Axiata for all the support the company had given BAM over the years.
“We’re looking forward to having an even closer relationship to develop our game – both at the elite and at the grassroots levels,” said Zakaria.
“We’re also hoping this partnership will help us win our first Olympic gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic,” added Zakaria.
In Rio de Janeiro, Malaysia won 3 silver medals in badminton. Those medals came from Lee Chong Wei in men’s singles, Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong in men’s doubles and Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying in mixed doubles.
