Kuala Lumpur: Rio Olympic mixed doubles silver medalists Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying who will be reunited this month at the Thailand Masters, have become emboldened to maximize their individual gifts after eight months apart.
The former World No. 3 mixed doubles pair are eyeing for a strong start of the year by winning the Thailand Masters title which is set to kick off in Bangkok next week.
According to the Penang born Chan Peng Soon, winning the Thailand Masters is going to be very important and would help boost their confidence level.
“I hope we can win the Thailand Masters, because it would help build our confidence early in the season,” said Chan.
“I can’t set a goal when I was paired with other players because it takes time to show results, especially partnering with younger shuttlers,”
“However, playing together with Liu Ying is completely different story. We set our goals high even though she has yet to recover 100% from her shoulder surgery,” added Chan.
Chan/Goh will face Chang Tak Ching/Ng Wing Yung of Hong Kong in the first round of Thailand Masters and he was also looking forward to strong commitment from Goh Liu Ying at the tournament.
“I’m no longer a young player as I used to be, in order to go far, it’s important that we both raise our level of play during the tournament.”
Chan also told reporters that one of their big goals this year is to win the gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast Australia.
“We indeed would like to win gold for the Commonwealth Games, but we also would like to reach at-least semi-finals in the Asian Games and World Championships.”
