Ho Chi Minh City: Malaysia’s World No. 70 Soong Joo Ven had to battle through one three-setter in his second round match against compatriot Soo Teck Zhi 21-15, 18-21, 21-19 and overcame Lucas Corvee of France later Thursday to book a last eight spot at the Vietnam Open.

Soong will face Lin Yu Hsien of Taiwan on Friday.

Meanwhile, other Malaysian men’s singles players such as Daren Liew, Tan Jia Wei, and Ng Jun Yan all have faltered in either the second or the third round.

The mixed doubles competition saw Malaysia’s No. 3 seeds Hoo Pang Ron/Cheah Yee See edged past Dong Wei Jie/Chen Xiao Fei of China 21-12, 17-21, 21-17 to set up quarter-final meeting with No. 5 seeds Mak Hee Chun/Chau Hoi Wah of Hong Kong. In women’s singles competition, Natsuki Oie of Japan pulled off a huge upset to down No. 1 seed Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland 21-11, 15-21, 21-16.
