Bangkok: Malaysia’s World No. 20 Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi continued their strong run at the Thailand Masters as they defeated World No. 21 Zhang Nan/Ou Xuan Yi of China in the second round.
Ong/Teo lost the opening set 19-21, but saved two match points to force a decider with a 23-21 victory in the second.
The Malaysian pair displayed some strong attacking style badminton to eventually knock off Zhang/Ou 21-19 to set up a quarter-final encounter with World No. 14 Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi of Japan.
The 2016 Rio Olympic silver medalists Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong also put up a brilliant performance to defeat Taiwan’s Liao Min Chun/Su Ching Heng 21-16, 21-15. Goh/Tan will face World No. 22 Marcus Ellis/Chris Langridge of England next.
In mixed doubles, the eight-seeded Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing overcame Dejan Ferdinansyah/Serena Kani of Indonesia 21-15, 21-13, and will be meeting Niclas Nohr/Sara Thygesen of Denmark on Friday.
Another Malaysian pair Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai also made the quarter-finals by outlasting Germany’s Mark Lansfuss/Isabel Herttrich 22-20, 21-15. Goh/Lai will take on Hong Kong’s Yeung Ming Nok/Ng Tsz Yau in the last eight.
Meanwhile, men’s singles No. 7 seed Lee Zii Jia failed to advance as he lost to Korean opponent Heo Kwang Hee, 19-21, 21-15, 16-21.
In women’s singles, Spain’s Carolina Marin dominated the second round match against Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand, beating the Thai player 21-11, 21-9. Marin will next meet Sayaka Takahashi of Japan.
