Jakarta: Prosecutors at Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) have indicted the country’s former youth and sports minister Imam Nahrawi for accepting Rp 11.5 billion (US$840,280) in bribes with additional Rp 8.64 billion from other government and Indonesian Sports Council (KONI) officials.
KPK has questioned Taufik Hidayat, the 2004 Athens Olympic gold medalist from Indonesia back in August 2019 as a witness in the bribery case.
In a statement made by KPK, they said the bribes were intended to accelerate the approval and disbursement of a state grant proposed by KONI to the Youth and Sports Ministry in 2018.
In 2019, the Jakarta Corruption Court has sentenced KONI secretary-general Ending Fuad Hamidy to two years and eight months in prison and a fine of Rp 100 million (US$7,089). The court has also sentenced KONI treasurer Johnny E. Awuy to one year and eight months in prison and a fine of Rp 50 million.
