Kuala Lumpur: The COVID-19 pandemic has forced Badminton World Federation (BWF) to cancel and to re-schedule several international tournaments as part of the public health measures to limit the spread of the coronavirus.
On Thursday, BWF has released its latest revised 2020 tournament schedule, where players will head directly to the Thomas & Uber Cup Finals, which will be held in Aarhus, Denmark from October 3 to October 11.
It’s also expected that either no fans or very limited fans will be allowed to attend that first international badminton tournament since 2020 All England (Mar 11, 2020 – Mar 15, 2020) at Ceres Arena in Aarhus.
Right after the Thomas & Uber Finals, in a somehow interesting arrangement, Denmark will then hold two Super 750 tournaments, including DANISA Denmark Open I and Denmark Open II.
That would conclude the European leg tournaments from week 40 to week 43.
All players would then have a two week off before playing in two Super 1000 tournaments in Weeks 46 and 47 which were called 2020 Asia Open I and 2020 Asia Open II, before the season finale with HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2020 in week 48. However, host cities for these Asian leg tournaments have not been determined yet.
“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was not possible to implement the revised international tournament calendar for the HSBC BWF World Tour as originally envisaged,” said BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund.
“We look forward to the return of international badminton and we thank all parties and participants involved in the planning process.”
