Bangkok: Malaysia’s World No. 9 men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik made a lightning start at the 2020 BWF World Tour Finals in Bangkok on Wednesday as they overwhelmed Korea’s World No. 8 Choi Sol Gyu/Seo Seung Jae 21-14, 21-19 in just 38 minutes.

The Malaysian pair was looking to boost their confidence ahead of the next competition, where they will face Marcus Ellis/Chris Langridge of England.

“We are happy with today’s performance,” said Chia.

“We managed to get the first win in the group stage, this is a confidence booster for the next two matches,” added Chia.

Chia/Soh were drawn in Group B with Choi Sol Gyu/Seo Seung Jae, Vladimir Ivanov/Ivan Sozonov from Russia, and the No. 3 seeds Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia.

In the men’s doubles Group A competition, another Malaysian pair, Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi put up a strong fight, but couldn’t stop Lee Yang/Wang Chi-Lin of Taiwan by going down 18-21, 22-24.

Malaysia’s unseeded mixed doubles pair, Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai Malaysia pulled off an upset in their first Group B match to down No. 2 seeds Mark Lamsfuss/Isabel Herttrich 14-21, 21-18, 21-18.

In the first Group A women’s doubles match between Chow Mei Kuan/Lee Meng Yean and Vivian Hoo/Yap Cheng Wen of Malaysia, Chow/Lee needed 66 minutes to topple their compatriots 21-16, 10-21, 21-15 to set up second Group A meeting with No. 3 seeds Lee So Hee/Shin Seung Chan of Korea.

Meanwhile, after losing to Chou Tien Chen of Taiwan in the quarter-finals of YONEX Thailand Open two weeks ago, Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia lost to Chou again when he finished 16-21, 21-12, 11-21 in his first action of Group A of the BWF World Tour Finals in Bangkok. Lee will play No. 1 seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark on Thursday.
