Kuala Lumpur: The reigning All England champion, Lee Zii Jia, received his first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine on Thursday, at the Desa Tasik Sports Complex vaccination center in Cheras.

The 23-year-old was supposely to get his first shot on Tuesday, together with other 264 athletes and officials in preparation for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

However, Malaysia’s men’s singles head coach, Hendrawan, said that Lee couldn’t take the shot because he was having fever caused by fatigue.

On Thursday, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) uploaded picture of Lee on their social media site showing the World No. 8 player has received coronavirus vaccination with the following message.

“After recovering from fever, @leeziijia received his first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, this morning.”

Those 264 athletes who got their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, are expected to get their second dose by May, so that they can start competing abroad safely.

As of today, although the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had not made vaccination mandatory for those participating in the Tokyo Olympics, athletes around the world are trying to be vacinated to protect themselves from the coronavirus.
