Kuala Lumpur: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has invited professional players, Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying and Soniia Cheah to join the Malaysian national team at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in preparation for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

BAM decided to gather all the players who will compete in the Olympics to train under one roof following the surge in COVID-19 cases in the country, which saw the government re-implemented the Movement Control Order (MCO) for the third time.

“As president, I would like to take these proactive steps to invite Peng Soon-Liu Ying & Soniia to train with the national team. I’m happy to welcome these experienced professional players to our facility for the glory of our beloved country, Malaysia,” said BAM President Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria.

“It is my hope that they will be able to train well together and at the same time, build the esprit de corps amongst them. When we reach Tokyo, there are no BAM or professional players, just a united group of shuttlers playing for the pride and glory of Jalur Gemilang,” added Zakaria.

Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying, currently ranked No. 7 in the mixed doubles event of the Race to Tokyo rankings while Cheah will make her first appearance at the world’s biggest games as the country’s best women’s singles as she is currently ranked No. 19 in the Race to Tokyo rankings.

With only one more Olympic qualifier left – Singapore Open, which will take place from June 1 to June 6, it’s hard for other Malaysian professional players to earn enough qualifying points to make the Tokyo Games.
