La Nucia: Malaysia’s Selvaduray Kisona, Goh Jin Wei, and Eoon Qi Xuan have advanced to the semi-finals of the 2021 Spanish International women’s singles event.
The World No. 61 Selvaduray Kisona started Friday by defeating Lucia Rodriguez of Spain 21-7, 21-14 in the second round before overcoming another local shuttler Beatriz Corrales 21-15, 21-14 in the quarter-finals. She will play Yaelle Hoyaux of France in the semi-finals.
Goh Jin Wei and Eoon Qi Xuan will set up an all Malaysian semi-final clash after both had no problems beating their opponents in the quarter-finals.
Goh saw off Jenjira Stadelmann from Switzerland 21-15, 21-12 to reach the last four while Eoon needed 33 minutes to beat Ania Setien of Spain 21-10, 21-12.
Malaysia’s 2021 Polish Open men’s doubles champions, Man Wei Chong/Tee Kai Wun pulled off an upset to down No. 3 seeds Philip Birker/Dominik Stipsits of Austria 21-18, 21-12 to enter the semi-finals. They will face Matthew Clare/Ethan Van Leeuwen of England on Saturday for a final berth.
Tee Kai Wun also featured himself in the mixed doubles semi-finals after he and Teoh Mei Xing trounced Victor Martin/Haidee Ojeda of Spain 21-17, 21-17 to set up a semi-final clash with Rodion Kargaev/Viktoriia Vorobeva from Russia in the mixed doubles semi-final.
No Malaysian players able to reach the men’s singles and women’s doubles semi-finals after Misbun Ramdan Mohmed Misbun was defeated by men’s singles No. 3 seed Pablo Abian of Spain in the second round while women’s doubles No. 2 seeds Teoh Mei Xing/Yap Ling lost to Jessica Hopton/Jessica Pugh of England 16-21, 21-15, 15-21.
