Jakarta: Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) has named its 24-player roster for the 2020 Thomas and Uber Cup Finals that will be held in Aarhus, Denmark, from October 9 to October 17, 2021.

The prestigious men’s and women’s team championships were postponed from 2020 to this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

PBSI has a good mix of veterans and young talent on both the Thomas and Uber Cup line-up.

Young players who were selected to represent Indonesia included sisters Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo and Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo, Leo Rolly Carnando, Daniel Marthin, Putri Syaikah, and Jesita Putri Miantoro.

The Head of the Development and Achievement of PBSI, Rionny Mainaky was glad to see a mix of veterans and promising young players in their pursuit of the Thomas and Uber Cup.

“We selected these players based on their performance in the last tournaments and also how they did during their training. They were the most prepared and qualified players we have. They are ready to fight and also ready to contribute points for the team,” said Mainaky.

“These young players are very motivated and have been giving their best in training,” continued Mainaky.

Mainaky knew as first-timers, these players could be feeling the pressure at these tournaments, therefore, he has been trying to strengthen the mentality of these young players.

“I’ve asked them in the last few weeks to spar with their seniors. I also often remind them personally to try to cope with the pressures and to help them strengthen their mentality,” explained Mainaky.

The Chairman of PBSI, Agung Firman Sampurna also sent his best wishes to the Indonesian team.

“We have gone through stages by stages before of these three important tournaments (Sudirman Cup, Thomas Cup, and Uber Cup). Starting from the post-Olympic recovery of the players, then undergoing intensive training until today. We have also held simulations tournaments for these championships. We have fulfilled the COVID-19 Health and Safety Protocols requirements. We want to make sure everything runs smoothly because don’t want what happened at All England to happen again,” said Sampurna.

Entire Indonesia’s badminton team was forced to withdraw from the 2021 All England Open Championships in Birmingham after a passenger on their flight to Britain tested positive for coronavirus.
