Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s World No. 91 men’s singles player, Ng Tze Yong is ready to shoulder the responsibility of contributing points for Malaysia should he be selected to play at the Sudirman Cup.
Ng told Malaysian media that he was excited to be listed for Malaysia’s 2021 Sudirman Cup squad.
In addition to Sudirman Cup, the 21-year-old was also chosen to play at the Thomas Cup Finals. Malaysia will face England in its first Sudirman Cup Group D tie on September 27. Malaysia is expected to field the strongest line-up against England, as England was also a powerful team at the mixed team championships.
Wong will likely get a chance to take the court when Malaysia plays Egypt in the second Group D match on Tuesday.
Besides Ng, Malaysia also has World No. 8 Lee Zii Jia, World No. 122 Aidil Sholeh as the men’s singles player for the Sudirman Cup challenge in Vantaa.
“I believe we are ready to face our opponents. Almost all the players listed on the team were first-timers, including me. We are eager to get things rolling,” said Ng.
“My job is to win and contribute points to the team,” added Ng.
Ng who won the Polish Open in March was chosen to play for Malaysia after successfully emerging men’s singles champion at the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) internal ranking tournament recently.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s former World No. 1 men’s singles player, Lee Chong Wei warned that the Malaysian team should not underestimate England and Egypt during the Group D matches.
“We know Japan is going to be the strongest team in Group D, but, we can’t take England and Egypt lightly as well. Players should be focused all the time throughout the tournament,” said Lee.
Lee was also confident that Malaysia could advance to the knockout stage. Only the top two teams from each group could advance to the quarter-finals.
