Vantaa: Despite fielding backup players, Malaysia faced no trouble to beat Egypt 5-0 in the 2021 Sudirman Cup, Group D tie in Vantaa, Finland on Tuesday.
After overcoming the biggest obstacle in Group D against England on Monday, Malaysia decided to provide its second-stringers more exposure in big tournaments by giving them opportunities to play in the second Group D match.
The World No. 49 mixed doubles pair, Chen Tang Jie/Peck Yen Wei needed only 20 minutes to beat Ahmed Salah/Nour Ahmed Youssri 21-6, 21-7 to score the first point for Malaysia.
Ng Tze Yong, who played in the men’s singles event, outlasted Mohamed Mostafa Kamel 21-8, 21-2 in 24 minutes.
In the women’s singles event that followed, Eoon Qi Xuan completed Malaysia’s tie by scoring the winning point after beating Doha Hany 21-5, 21-7 in 23 minutes.
The Egyptian team who only brought four players to the Sudirman Cup, paired up Mohamed Mostafa Kamel/Ahmed Salah to take on Man Wei Chong/Tee Kai Wun, and the Malaysians quickly wrapped up the proceeding with 21-7, 21-6.
Teoh Mei Xing/Yap Ling then recorded a 21-4, 21-9 victory over Nour Ahmed Youssri/Doha Hany in the women’s doubles match to give Malaysia a 5-0 win over Egypt.
Malaysia will take on Japan in the final Group D action on Thursday.
Only group champions and runners-up from each group would qualify for the quarter-finals.
