Odense: Malaysia’s World No. 12 mixed doubles pair, Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing who last competed at 2021 All England Open, pulled off an upset on Tuesday to beat World No. 9 Hafiz Faizal/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja of Indonesia 21-17, 21-14 to enter the Denmark Open second round.

The Malaysian pair will face Korea’s World No. 23 Ko Sung Hyun/Eom Hye Won next.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s World No. 26 men’s doubles pair, Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin also put on a brilliant performance to down World No. 37 Attri Manu/Reddy B. Sumeeth of India 21-18, 21-11 to face India’s World No. 10 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty in the next round.

Other than the two pairs above, Malaysia suffered three losses in women’s doubles and one in mixed doubles.

After giving the Tokyo Olympic women’s doubles gold medalists – Greysia Polii/Apriyani Rahayu a good run for their money in the 2021 Sudirman Cup quarter-final tie between Malaysia and Indonesia, Pearly Tan/Thinaah Muralitharan showed the same resilience against the Olympic champions in the Denmark Open first-round encounter. In a matchup with plenty of fierce battles, Tan/Muralitharan managed to push Polii/Rahayu into the rubber-set before conceding 21-17, 13-21, 14-21.

Malaysia’s other women’s pairs – Vivian Hoo/Lim Chiew Sien, Lee Meng Yean/Yap Cheng Wen, and the World No. 25 mixed double pair – Hoo Pang Ron/Cheah Yee See were all crashing out in the first round on Tuesday.

The second day of the 2021 Denmark Open will continue to feature some highly anticipated matchups including the hope of Malaysia’s independent men’s pair Goh V Shem/Low Juan Shen to stop the winning momentum of Tokyo Olympics gold medalists – Lee Yang/Wang Chi-Lin, Wang Tzu Wei of Chinese Taipei versus Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia in the men’s singles event, and Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen to battle his sparring partner in Dubai – Loh Kean Yew of Singapore. Both Axelsen and Loh trained together for few weeks in Dubai after the Tokyo Olympics and before the start of the 2021 Sudirman Cup.
