Bali: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has confirmed that the Rio Olympics mixed doubles silver medalist Chan Peng Soon will rejoin the BAM and will officially report to the Malaysian national team on January 1, 2022.

The president of BAM, Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria told reporters that after a thorough discussion, BAM has decided to welcome the 33-year-old back to the Malaysian national team to strengthen BAM’s mixed doubles department, and also become a mentor for younger players.

BAM announced the news on its social media pages on Tuesday:

“The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) confirms that Chan Peng Soon has joined the national team in Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM), Bukit Kiara after application.

After thorough deliberation, the Association has reached the decision to absorb the accomplished 33-year-old shuttler with the objective of strengthening the mixed doubles department and implementing a mentoring role for the youthful national squad.

Peng Soon will report for national duty on 1 January 2022.

‘We are delighted to be able to add a player of his experience and credentials to our national team.’

‘In his application, he has stated his intentions to fight for Paris 2024 and expressed his determination to also serve the role of mentor to our young team.’

‘It is our hope that he will be able to share the wealth of his experiences with our young players and we have no doubt that his qualities will complement the many young talents we have here in ABM,’ said BAM President, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria.

Meanwhile, Goh Liu Ying was also grateful to be able to play with Chan since 2009.

“My badminton career would not be complete without Chan Peng Soon, thank you to him!” said Goh.

Goh told Malaysian media that Chan has been a strong backbone for her badminton career in the past 13 years, and he is the best partner she has ever worked with on the court.

“I think everyone has the right to choose their own path. I respect his decision, and he respects mine,” said Goh.

“It is really difficult for me to part ways with him, but I believe that every journey has its end, and maybe this end is good for both of us,” added Goh.

When asked about her next plan, Goh, now 32, pointed out that she would like to rest for at least 2 months before making the next decision.

Both Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying tendered their letter of resignation to BAM on November 29, 2018, and announced their official departure from BAM on December 17 of the same year. The two continued to compete at international tournaments as an independent pair until they officially announced the end of their 13-year partnership two days ago.
