Singapore: A crowdfunding site was set up for the reigning World Champion – Loh Kean Yew of Singapore after Singaporean badminton fans realized that Loh actually did not receive any prize money despite being the first Singaporean and the first unseeded player to ever win the men’s singles title at the BWF World Championships.
The crowdfunding was set up by an avid badminton player in Singapore called Wei Chan on Jan 2, 2022. As of 8.50 am, Jan 5, 2022, Singapore time, it has raised over S$115,572.90 from more than 400 donors, with more donations continuing to pour in.
Donations have piled in since last month when Wei Chan managed to secure S$50,000 from five business leaders (including himself) alongside executives from companies such as skincare distributor Best World International, seafood house Jumbo Group, fintech firm DC Frontiers, and IT company JK Technology.
A very generous and anonymous donor only identified as a former national badminton team member contributed S$50,000 to kick start the crowdfunding campaign.
That donor also posted the message below to encourage Loh to keep improving and keep striving for success in badminton.
“Amazing achievement Kean Yew. Keep scaling new heights and continue to make us proud!”
