New Delhi: Japan’s current men’s doubles coach – Tan Kim Her who was instrumental in guiding Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi to become the first Japanese men’s doubles world champion at the 2021 BWF World Championships, has decided to return to India for a second stint.

BAI announced on Friday that Tan was given a five-year contract, will serve as BAI’s doubles coach till the 2026 Asian Games.

“Malaysia’s Tan Kim Her returns for his 2nd stint as doubles coach for 🇮🇳 badminton till Asian Games in 2026. While putting coaching system in place he will look after coach education & developing a new crop of Indian Coaches as well.

Welcome back, coach!,” tweeted BAI.

However, the announcement didn’t mention the exact start date for Tan.

During Tan’s first stint with BAI from 2015 to 2019, India saw the rise of the men’s doubles pair of Chirag Shetty/Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, who won the silver medal at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and also helped India win the mixed team gold for the first time.

Shetty/Rankireddy also won the 2018 Hyderabad Open and also reached the finals at the 2018 Syed Modi Super 300 tournament.

Tan also coached India’s women’s doubles pair – N Sikki Reddy/Ashwini Ponnappa to win the bronze medal at Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

However, Tan resigned as India’s doubles badminton coach in March of 2019 citing personal reasons.

“Satwik and I are excited that coach Tan is back. He was the person who paired us together and got us from nowhere to top 16 when he left India in 2019,” said Shetty.

“Satwik and I were not very confident at the frontcourt, and he played a big role in improving our skills,” added Shetty.
