Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s World No. 46 men’s singles player Ng Tze Yong has withdrawn from the 2022 German Open which was scheduled to kick off in Muelheim, Germany, on March 8, 2022.
According to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), the 21-year-old has suffered a minor injury and had to pull out of the tournament.
“The world number 46 men’s singles player is still recovering from a minor injury, so he has to skip the German Open and will focus on the Swiss Open (March 22-27),” said BAM’s singles coaching director Wong Choong Hann.
Ng’s vacated spot has been filled by China’s World No. 64 Li Shifeng, and Li will take on Indonesia’s World No. 8 Jonathan Christie in the first round.
Meanwhile, World No. 7 men’s pair from Malaysia – Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik have also pulled out of German Open after Soh Wooi Yik was tested positive for COVID-19.
“BAM has confirmed Soh Wooi Yik was tested positive for COVID-19,” said BAM in a statement announced on Monday.
“Wooi Yik shows no symptoms and is in good condition. He is currently undergoing self-quarantine following the health protocol issued by the Ministry of Health (MOH), Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), and the National Sports Council (MSN),” mentioned BAM.
Based on the original schedule, Chia/Soh were set to meet compatriots Goh V Shem/Low Juan Shen in the first round.
Goh/Low were also decided to skip tournaments in Europe as Goh still recovering from injury.
