Birmingham: After advancing to two finals in the last two weeks, India’s World No. 11 Lakshya Sen has decided to withdraw from the 2022 Swiss Open which was scheduled to kick off the qualification round and a portion of the mixed doubles first-round matches on Tuesday, in Basel, Switzerland.

Sen who went down to World No. 18 Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand in the German Open final two weeks ago and lost to World No. 1 Viktor Axelsen in the All England final two days ago, might have been low on energy and would need some rest to get ready for upcoming tournaments.

“He is not playing Swiss Open as he is feeling tired. He has informed the Badminton Association of India (BAI). So he will be back to Bangalore, get 7-10 days of rest, and then go for Korean Open,” Sen’s mentor Vimal Kumar told Indian media PTI.

Sen had produced a great run of form in the last six months as he won the bronze medal at the 2021 World Championships before winning the 2022 India Open Super 500 title in January. Of course, he also finished runner-up at the German Open and All England Championships.

The 20-year-old was supposed to face compatriot Sameer Verma in the first round, and Lucas Claerbout of France has filled the spot he vacated.

In absence of Sen, India’s focus will be on World No. 7 PV Sindhu (women’s singles), World No. 12 Kidambi Srikanth (men’s singles), and World No. 8 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty (men’s doubles).

The second-seeded Sindhu will meet Denmark’s Line Højmark Kjaersfeldt in her opening round, while Srikanth will take on a qualifier in the first round.

Meanwhile, the third-seeded men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty will have to do things the hard way as they will open against the red-hot Muhammad Shohibul Fikri/Bagas Maulana of Indonesia who just won the 2022 All England two days ago.
