Basel: Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi, Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik and Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin of Malaysia are now just three wins away from the Swiss Open men’s doubles title after winning their respective round-of-16 matches on Thursday.
The World No. 11 Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi outlasted Alexander Dunn/Adam Hall of Scotland 21-16, 21-12 in the second round and will face World No. 9 Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto of Indonesia on Friday.
Chia/Soh also through to the quarter-final stage as the world No. 8 seemed unbothered by the Indian pair – Bokka Navaneeth/Reddy B. Sumeeth, winning their second-round match 21-15, 21-14 to meet World No. 16 Mark Lamsfuss/Marvin Seidel of Germany in the last 8. Chia/Soh recorded a 3-1 career meeting record against the German pair, with their only loss being during the 2021 Swiss Open semi-finals, when Lamsfuss/Seidel beat Chia/Soh 21-13, 13-21, 21-16.
Despite their first-round defeat in last week’s All England Championships, the 2022 German Open champions – Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin treated fans to an epic first set as they saved two game-points to claim the first game 23-21 against Jeppe Bayden/Lasse Mølhede of Denmark. Goh/Izzuddin then dominated and won the second game 21-18 to set up a quarter-final face-off with Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin of Indonesia.
In men’s singles, Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie wrapped up the second round with an 18-21, 21-13, 21-12 win over Ng Tze Yong of Malaysia. Christie will next take on Toma Junior Popov of France.
Meanwhile, the World No. 1 and last week’s All England men’s singles champion – Viktor Axelsen has decided to withdraw from the Swiss Open citing not feeling well. He posted the message below on social media on Thursday.
“Hi guys.
In the end of my match yesterday I started feeling uncomfortable and during the evening I didn’t feel good.
I had hoped I was able to recover and get ready to compete again today, however that isn’t the case.
I’m really gutted about this as I really enjoy playing here in Switzerland and had been looking forward to see how I could do this week. The organisers are doing a great job trying to do the best for the sport here, so it makes me sad that I have to withdraw from my match today.
I will now take the days needed in order for me to recover before I start my training towards my next tournaments. Thanks for your support!
