Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s World No. 11 men’s pair – Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi are ready to take the responsibility of playing a crucial role for Malaysia at the 2022 Thomas Cup Finals which will be held in Bangkok, from May 8, 2022, to May 15, 2022.

Ong who was just a benchwarmer when he first played for Malaysia’s Thomas Cup squad in 2016, told Malaysian media that he is ready to shoulder the responsibility of winning a point for Malaysia when playing in Bangkok.

“In 2016, Ee Yi and I were just trying to experience the real atmosphere of the Thomas Cup competition. We had two senior pairs – Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong and Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong at that time. This time I am ready to fight for the team,” said Ong.

“Pressures in the team and individual tournaments are different. However, I don’t want to think too much about it because I’m worried I will lose focus,” added Ong.

In 2018, only Teo Ee Yi was listed in the Malaysia Thomas Cup squad.

In the 2022 edition, the 2021 World Championships bronze medalists were listed as the second men’s pair in the Malaysia Thomas Cup squad behind World No. 9 Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik.

Ong/Teo are expected to meet the Japanese pair, Taichi Saito/Akira Koga in the group stage competition between Malaysia and Japan.

“No doubt, our world rankings are indeed higher than Saito/Koga who ranked World No. 23. But everything is possible in the men’s doubles category,” explained Ong.

Apart from Japan, Malaysia has been drawn alongside England and New Zealand in Group D.
