Milan: Malaysia’s two-time former World Junior champion (2015, 2018) Goh Jin Wei who came out of her retirement and has been slowly working her way back to the top of the badminton world, retired from the 2022 Italian International semi-finals after losing the first game 24-26 to No. 2 seed Hsu Wen Chi of Chinese Taipei on Saturday.
Goh started the day by beating Rachel Chan of Canada 21-18, and 21-18 in the quarter-finals.
In September 2021, Goh announced her retirement from professional badminton in a YouTube video, citing health reasons after her colectomy surgery back in 2019. She resumed her badminton career at the 2022 Korea Open where she managed to advance to the quarter-finals before being defeated by Kim Gaeun of Korea 15-21, 18-21.
The No. 2 seed Hsu Wen Chi will take on No. 1 seed Malvika Bansod of India for the women’s singles title.
Meanwhile, the men’s singles No. 7 seed Cheam June Wei of Malaysia put up a strong fight but ultimately went down to Christian Adinata of Indonesia 17-21, 10-21.
Adinata will play Magnus Johannesen of Denmark in the final.
The unseeded men’s doubles pair from Malaysia – Chia Weijie/Low Hang Yee needed 36 minutes to see off Chen Zhi Ray/Lee Fang-Jen of Chinese Taipei 21-15, 21-18 in the quarter-finals. However, Chia/Low couldn’t get their momentum going when they lost to Su Ching Heng/Ye Hong Wei also from Chinese Taipei 19-21, 16-21 in the semi-finals.
Su/Ye are set to play Kim Jaehwan/Dae Il Yoon of Korea on Sunday.
