Axelsen overcame teammate – World No. 16 Rasmus Gemke 21-14, 21-15 in the final.
This was Axelsen’s first career French Open title. He advanced to the final for the first time in 2012 but lost to Daren Liew of Malaysia.
So far this season, Axelsen had won the All England, European Championships, Indonesia Open, Indonesia Masters, Malaysia Open, World Championships, and the French Open.
In the men’s doubles final, India’s World No. 8 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty put on a dominant display with speed and power to claim a one-sided affair against Taiwan’s World No. 25 Lu Ching Yao/Yang Po Han 21-13.
The Taiwanese pair had a chance to force a decider when they staged a comeback from 5-11 to lead at 19-17. Rankireddy/Shetty’s experience proved useful during critical moments as they quickly clawed back to 19-19 after winning a lucky net shot and Yang’s return was out of bounds.
The Indian pair continued playing aggressively as Rankireddy scored the match-point with a powerful smash from the right mid-court area and wrapped up the match 21-19 with a strong attack near the left side of the net.
