Ipoh: Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei got a chance to win their second title in just two weeks when they successfully secured a ticket to the final of the 2022 Malaysia International Challenge.

The mixed doubles No. 5 seeds defeated Thailand’s Kittipong Imnark/Ornnicha Jongsathapornparn 21-16, 21-14 in the semi-final action at the Perak Badminton Arena, Ipoh in 26 minutes on Saturday.

Chen/Toh won their first title as a pair in the senior level at the 2022 Bangladesh International Challenge in Dhaka last week by beating Phatharathorn Nipornram/Alisa Sapniti of Thailand 21-15, 21-13. They are scheduled to play compatriots Hoo Pang Ron/Teoh Mei Xing in the final. The No. 6 seeds Hoo/Teoh saw off their teammates and No. 2 seeds Yao Roy King/Valeree Siow 21-17, 21-15 at the bottom half of the mixed doubles draw.

In addition to the mixed doubles title, the home team also guaranteed gold in the men’s singles and men’s doubles categories.

The 18-year-old Justin Hoh fought hard for 67 minutes to down two-time former Malaysia national champion Lim Chi Wing 17-21, 21-17, 21-19 in the semi-finals and will play compatriot Aidil Sholeh in the final. The No. 11 seed Aidil Sholeh needed 45 minutes to overcome Yeoh Seng Zoe 21-18, 21-14.

Meanwhile, the World No. 10 men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin who were split up temporarily, will be facing each other on the opposite side of the court on Sunday as they and their new partners (Goh Sze Fei and Goh Boon Zhe, Nur Izzuddin and Muhammad Haikal) have advanced to the final.

Malaysia gets a chance to possibly pick up another title if unseeded Karupathevan Letshanaa could beat No. 8 seed Yulia Yosephine Susanto of Indonesia in the women’s singles final.

The women’s doubles final saw No. 1 seeds Yujia Jin/Wong Jia Ying Crystal of Singapore battle unseeded pair from Thailand Ornnicha Jongsathapornparn/Atitaya Povanon for the women’s doubles crown.
