GUANGZHOU: Doubles pair Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari made a comeback to beat Russia’s Vladimir Ivanov-Ivan Sozonov 14-21, 21-15, 21-16 in the second round of the World Championships at the Tianhe Gymnasium, Guangzhou, on Wednesday.
The Malaysians put up a strong fight to beat the Russian pair in 48 minutes and were delighted with their victory.
“This is a great gift for Hari Raya celebration. Fairuz and I played all our hearts out to make the third round and I am sure our family back home are really happy,” said Zakry.
Fairuzizuan felt that “the Russians were really going all out with their attacking game but fortunately our game plan worked well. This win makes up for our disappointed of missing the Hari Raya celebration of at home”.
The pair will face Japan’s Hiroyuki Endo-Kenichi Hayakawa in the third round next.
