PETALING JAYA: Independent shuttler Misbun Ramdan Misbun won his fourth title of the year after beating Germany’s Dieter Domke in the men’s singles final of the Carlton Irish Open in Dublin on Saturday.
The national champion, who left the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in January to train under his father Misbun, did not put a foot wrong as he overcame the towering Domke 21-13, 21-18 in 33 minutes.
It is a boost for the 22-year-old as he is now going to improve on his current ranking of 48 in the world. He had earlier won the Portugese International, Forza Slovenia International and Hellas International in Greece.
There was, however, no joy for Tan Chun Seang. The former BAM shuttler finished empty-handed after falling to the in-form South Korean Son Wan-ho at the Vietnam Open Grand Prix final in Ho Chi Minh City.
Chun Seang, who needed 63 minutes to beat two-time SEA Games champion Simon Santoso of Indonesia in the semi-finals on Saturday, was a spent force in the title playoff. He lost 14-21, 9-21 in just 30 minutes. It was the 25-year-old Wan-ho’s third title of the season after the Taiwan and Macau Open GP Golds.
“I am a little disappointed because I thought I could give my opponent a better fight and finish the year on a high. But I was too tired after my semi-final match,” said the 27-year-old Chun Seang.
“I will now work on my fitness before the Korean and Malaysian Opens in January,” he added.
National women’s doubles pair Amelia Alicia Anscelly-Soong Fie Cho also finished second best in Vietnam. They lost 21-12, 10-21, 9-21 in 53 minutes to South Korea’s Ko A-ra-Yoo Hae-won.
