Jakarta: Indonesia’s top mixed-doubles badminton player, Tontowi Ahmad, married his girlfriend, Michelle Harminc, in Pondok Kelapa, East Jakarta on Saturday. The couple, who has been dating for two and a half year, has previously held an engagement party on May 25, 2014.
The 27-year-old shuttler, who won the 2013 World Championships mixed-doubles title with Liliyana Natsir, recently withdrew from the 2014 World Championships due to a leg injury sustained during the 2014 Australian Open in June.
“I’m kind of anxious about becoming a husband because that means greater responsibility to me and to the family,” said Tontowi.
“I just hope that my wife and I can develop a harmonious and religious family, and I hope the marriage will boost my motivation to excel in future tournaments,” said the three-time All England champion.
When asked about when they are going to have their honeymoon, he said: “We have not planned for honeymoon yet, because I have to undergo preparatory training ahead of the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, Korea, “said Tontowi.
Tontowi also postponed his wedding reception to January 2015 when the badminton season of next year has not yet begun.
