Palembang: Just when things couldn’t get any worse, they suddenly couldn’t get any better for Daren Liew. On Thursday, Daren rebounded from his recent disastrous career slump to upset top seed Indonesian Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka 22-20, 21-14, in round two of the Indonesian Masters GPG.
The 2012 French Open champion was very happy and thankful after the win.
“The last time I reached final eight in any tournament was at last year’s China Open. This victory was really a confidence booster for me, I’ve been feeling so down and unmotivated after the Commonwealth Games,” said Daren.
Daren will take on Sai Praneeth in the quarter finals.
“After losing to P. Kashyap in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, I won’t underestimate any Indian players anymore,” added Daren.
Former world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkiffli of Malaysia also breezed into last eight after trashing Huang Chao of Singapore 21-15, 21-14 in 38 minutes. He faces Indonesian Ivanudin Rifan Fauzin, who fought off second seed Sony Dwi Kuncoro 25-23, 24-22, in the next round.
Meanwhile, 15th seed RJ Subagja also advanced to the quarter-finals after eliminated third seed Derek Wong Zi Liang of Singapore 21-18,9-21,21-16 in 46 minutes. RJ will challenge India’s fifth seed HS Prannoy, who previously defeated other Indonesian players Sukamta Evert 21-18,13-21,21-15.
In the mixed doubles, Malaysian pair Lee Meng Yean-Ong Jian Guo edged-past third seeds Irfan Fadhillah-Weni Anggraini of Indonesia 21-11, 21-16 to enter the quarter final. However, another Malaysian mixed doubles hopeful – Tan Aik Quan-Lai Pei Jing bowed out to Indonesians Lukhi Apri Nugroho-Masita Mahmudin 18-21, 21-11, 22-24.
Lee Meng Yean also booked a quarter-final berth in women’s doubles after beating Mahadewi Istirani Ni Ketut-Melvira Oklamona of Indonesia 21-15, 21-19. They are set to clash with second seeds Olga Golovanova-Viktoriia Vorobeva of Russia on Friday.
