Incheon: On Wednesday, unseeded Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong of Malaysia staved off world No. 6 Lee Sheng-mu-Tsai Chia-hsin of Taiwan in a thrilling three-set match at the first round of Asian Games men’s doubles event.Goh V Shem (left) and Tan Wee Kiong in action

Goh-Tan lost their first set 21-15 in 13 minutes, but they fought back and stomped the second and third set to best the Taiwanese pair 21-12, 22-20. They will clash with Patiphat Chalardchalaem-Wannawat Ampunsuwan of Thailand in round of 16 on Thursday.Hope Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong can go as far as they can in Asian Games

 

On the other hand, it was unfortunate for the other  Malaysian men’s doubles pair – Tan Boon Heong-Hoon Thien How. Tan-Hoon handed walkover to Liu Xiaolong-Qiu Zihan of China in the first round due to thigh injury suffered by Tan Boon Heong.

 

Malaysian men’s doubles coach Pang Cheh Chang revealed that after receiving a diagnosis, the team doctor said Tan Boon Heong has a two centimeter muscle tear on the right thigh.

 

Meanwhile, Akane Yamaguchi of Japan defeated Malaysia’s top women’s singles Tee Jing Yi 21-15, 21-16 in the opener, while another Malaysian women’s singles Yang Li Lian progressed to second round without playing after Maisa Fathuhulla Ismail of Maldives pulled out from the tournament. Yang faces world No. 4 Sung Ji-hyun of South Korea in the second round.

 

In the men’s singles second round matches on Thursday, world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei will open his campaign against Umer Zeeshan of Pakistan while Malaysia’s second men’s singles Chong Wei Feng will begin a tough opening tie against reigning world champion Chen Long of China.
