Ipoh: Former world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkiffli will take on top seed Daren Liew in the men’s semi-final clash of the Perak Open badminton tournament on Saturday.
Zulfadli rallied past former Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) player K. Yogendran in the quarter-final to prevail 21-10, 21-18 while Daren Liew had a relatively easy victory against former Asian junior champion Soo Teck Zhi with 21-15, 21-16.
Zulfadli said he will give his all on Saturday.
“I’ve reached the semi-finals of National Grand Prix Finals twice, if I can defeat Daren tomorrow, that would be my first final in a local tournament,” said Zulfadli after the match.
However, the number three men’s singles player of Malaysia – Daren Liew is confident that he could extend his winning record against Zulfadli in the semi-final face-off.
“If I can play a solid game tomorrow, I should be able to beat Zulfadli,” said Daren.
Tan Kian Meng and Goh Soon Huat will be playing on the other men’s singles semi-final.
Reigning Commonwealth Games men’s doubles gold medalists Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong had to put in extra work to fight off a resilient display from Vietnam International Series champions Low Juan Shen-Ong Yew Sin 22-20, 21-19 to earn a place in the semi-final.
“They still riding the momentum from a win last Sunday in Vietnam, it was a tough fight, we want to encourage them to keep working hard and keep improving,” said V Shem.
In another men’s doubles quarter-final, former internationals Mak Hee Chun-Tan Bin Shen were granted a walkover from top seeds Chooi Kah Ming-Teo Ee Yi due to Kah Ming’s ankle injury.
Two former BAM shuttlers Lydia Cheah and Julia Wong will take on current BAM players Ho Yen Mei and Yang Li Lian respectively in the women’s singles semi-finals.
